Tips for initial consultations with lawyers:
1. There is information that is critical that your attorney will want before knowing any details. Where the case is, what kind of a case it is (Custody, Divorce, Criminal [what the charge is], Order for Protection, etc.). 2. The attorney will ask you some questions to understand what is currently happening, is there a court date, what is the court date for, is there prior counsel, etc. These are simple easy to answer questions that does not seek background. 3. The attorney will ask you what your goals are. In a consultation while some background information is necessary the attorney will know what is necessary to give you a quote and some information. Phone and in person initial consultations are an introduction, a chance for the attorney to obtain basic information and to give you a quote or estimate of fees. After that consultation you might want to schedule a follow up appointment to retain the attorney. The attorney will want additional information on your case and any documentation you have. It can be frustrating when a case has a lot of background, is stressful and significant for you. The lawyer has a role and that is to advocate in the legal system. Attorneys with experience know what information they need to give you a quote for fees and what information they will need to gather in case you retain them.
